Meet Molly Hansen

Molly HansenWhat leadership role(s) do you hold here?

I am currently the secretary of the Board of Directors and have previously served as President and Vice-president. I am also a Prayer Chaplain.

What's your favorite thing about Abundant Life Spiritual Center?

Wow. This is really tough – I love so much about Abundant Life. It is truly a spiritual home for me – I always feel engaged when I participate in an AL activity whether it’s Sunday Celebration, a class like Foundations or a workshop like Crucial Conversations. The community of friends is amazing. I have been through some pretty significant challenges since we first began and I have always felt supported – in prayer, in love and in integrity. And, I am learning to request support! That’s big for me.

What is one thing you're looking forward to this year?

I am looking forward to the Prayer Class in June. I am a Prayer Chaplain and I LOVE praying with and for people – it is truly one of my all time favorite things to do. To encourage others in their prayer life will be fun and totally gratifying.

How do you like to spend your free time?

I like to go for walks with my husband. I love to cook and read but making the time to do both is hard sometimes. I love to hang out with my three grown kids.

What is your favorite book or movie?

My favorite book is The Miracle of Mindfulness by Thich Nhat Hahn. One of my favorite movies is the rather new-ish, um.., I’ll call it the Godfather Duet rather than the Godfather Trilogy. It is Godfather 1 & 2 put together chronologically and there is additional footage not used in the original movies. It is VERY LONG but I love watching it. They wisely leave off Part 3.

If you could invite any three people, living or dead, to dinner for an evening, who would you choose and why?

This could be different on any given day depending on what is on my heart and mind at the time. Today, I would like to invite Pema Chodron, Tibetan Buddhist nun; Karen Armstrong, former Roman Catholic religious sister, author and often called “a prominent and prolific religious historian; and Jesus. I would LOVE to hear Jesus’s perspective on women in religious communities.

When was the last time you laughed really hard?

Last night, April 25, 2016. I was at the retirement party of a dear friend who has just retired after 42 years as the Production Stage Manager at the Goodman Theatre. Joe and his wife Sara were the impetus for me to move to Chicago in September, 1979 and Sara, with another friend, set me up on a blind date where I met my husband Scott. Joe is one of the most hilarious, irreverent, naughty, spicy, generous, kind and loving people I know.

Anything else you want to share?

I came into the planning of Abundant Life Spiritual Center feeling spiritually bereft. I have learned so much and made such wonderful friends – I really can’t imagine my life without a spiritual community like this! So, so grateful to Rev. Carol for her leadership and teachings! And most of all so grateful to Divine Spirit, God, the energy and source of all there is!

Meet Bonnie DeMartini

Bonnie DeMartini 2015What leadership role(s) do you hold here?

I am serving as Abundant Life’s Licensed Unity Teacher. In this role, I assist Reverend Carol in a variety of project plans and classes, specifically, class curriculum, calendar planning, small group facilitation and prayer chaplaincy training. In my role, I am also a Prayer Chaplain and group leader. I work to envision and manifest the highest good of our community.

What's your favorite thing about Abundant Life Spiritual Center?

Seeing the transformation of individuals as they live the truth of their being and lead amazing lives I have been in a position to witness so many who ‘light up’ when they engage in our community. To know that we come together to share, to encourage and to be love in this world fills me up.

What is one thing you're looking forward to this year?

I am feeling energized by the excitement over what we can create and manifest as a community. In my personal life, it is similar. My husband and I are in early stages of retirement and we are also creating and manifesting what the next stage of our lives will be as we spend time together traveling and envisioning.

How do you like to spend your free time?

What’s free time? I am a person who plans for busyness. I like writing, reading, creating and travel. In the past year or so, I have learned that a blank canvas is very exciting to me so when someone shares an idea or an idea comes to me, I love spending time seeing where it can go. Abundant Life Spiritual Center and my ministry training provides many opportunities to look at a ‘blank canvas’.

What's your favorite book?

My current favorite book is Jim Rosemergy’s, A Closer Walk With God. I began reading the book and then listening to Rev. Carol’s message series on this topic while I was teaching a class on Monday mornings based on the book. I became steeped in the teachings and practices. There has been a shift in my prayer life as I my walk with God is how I live my life. I am touched that a small group formed around the study of this book and we continue to meet several years later. I am blessed by the impact this book is having on my life and the lives of others.

If you could invite any three people, living or dead, to dinner for an evening, who would you choose and why?

My adult children would be invited. Perhaps I will do this. As I reach a stage of life where there is more wisdom than knowledge, more strength than weakness and more faith than worry it would be wonderful to sit with ease and grace to share life lessons in a deep and meaningful way.

When was the last time you laughed really hard?

Almost daily! I am married to a man who sees humor in the moments of life.  We are silly and funny together and it makes life a joy.

Anything else you want to share?

What a pleasure and honor it is to serve the community of Abundant Life Spiritual Center as we grow and thrive and manifest goodness.
