Let Freedom Ring!

let freedom ring-21447By Rev. Carol

Every July 4th we are reminded of the vision that our country’s founders had for this nation – a land of the free. The United States is an experiment in self-governance. Self-governance and Freedom are Divine ideas plucked out of the realm of Infinite Possibilities and put in place here in our immediate world. While we may have been sloppy at fully implementing freedom for all, we are blessed by its ideals. And as citizens we have the choice to embrace it or lose it. Our experiment will only truly work if we the people educate ourselves, stay fully informed and also commit ourselves to evolving our consciousness ever higher.

We can also embrace self-governance on a personal level. Like all Divine Ideas, on a personal level Freedom is actually free. No matter what is happening, we have the freedom to choose our response – to govern ourselves, if you will. That costs us nothing. We are free to be easily offended, and many of us have taken that on as if it were a full-time career! It makes for a miserable life, but everyone is free to feel miserable. We are also free to choose self-mastery. Embracing a free life, I can choose to release the human pattern of victimization and blaming.

For me, this is what I choose. No one is to blame for my life. No one. My life is my own. You can say what you want, do what you want, hate me, insult me, think and act against my own values, gossip about me and collude against me. While it may hurt my feelings and sensibilities (and believe me, it usually does!), I choose the higher path of Love and Peace, over and over. It’s hard. And it may take awhile for me to process and reach the place of Love in my heart. But that is what Jesus, our master teacher taught: “Love God. Love one another.” There’s a whole lot more to say about this in a future blog.

Moving from the personal level to the global level, Freedom among nations does come at a price. The Declaration of Independence spawned a bloody war in which thirteen fledgling colonies eventually gained sovereignty from Great Britain and birthed a new nation with a representative government – the United States of America. Nearly 240 years have passed and it’s hard for us to fathom the courage it must have taken to stand up to the largest empire at the time for the ideal of self-governance. Freedom wasn’t easily won for all, but our forefathers (and mothers) persevered and today we are the recipients of their labor and undying commitment. Today all of us have the right to pursue happiness, to speak freely and to vote for our representative government. That is something to be grateful for.

Let us be called to embrace the Divine Idea of Freedom both for our personal selves and for our world! I invite you to take a look at your life - how you react to outer conditions and how your engage in the freedoms you have inherited as a citizen of this country.

On the personal level, do you live freely and make empowering choices? Or do you choose to be enslaved by the opinions of others, old limiting beliefs or by events or people who may have wronged you in the past? Do you take responsibility for creating your life going forward, choosing to bring Light and Love to your daily encounters? Or do you blame others for your circumstances or for the condition of the world? Do you actively make your life one of empowering relationships, good health and authentic creative expression? Or do you complain about all that is missing? You have the power to choose which life you live.

On the more global level, do you participate fully and positively in the choices that your nation makes possible for you? Or do you turn a blind eye to what is happening and what might be yours to do? Do you seek a deeper understanding of issues and viewpoints, even those about which you may have already decided? Or do you rely on headlines, tweets, sound bites, TV shows, groupthink and popularity contests to inform your vote? Do you want to retain the freedom to make responsible choices for yourself? Or do you want to be told what choices you must make for yourself? Again, you have the power to choose which life you live.

These are just a few considerations to ponder as we declare ourselves as independent divine beings having a human experience. We are so blessed. You are free. I am free. Listen to Spirit and embrace Freedom. Exuberantly express its Light as you create your life and your world with responsibility and integrity. It is your natural and true state!

“It is absolutely clear that God has called you to a free life. Just make sure that you don't use this freedom as an excuse to do whatever you want to do and destroy your freedom. Rather, use your freedom to serve one another in love; that's how freedom grows. For everything we know about God's Word is summed up in a single sentence: Love others as you love yourself. That's an act of true freedom.” Galatians 5:13-14 The Message Bible
