Renewal, Restoration and Joy

Carol at weddingDear Abundant Life Friends,

I am taking a much-needed three-week leave from Abundant Life Spiritual Center beginning August 5. For almost four years, I have been consistently ‘at work’ as a minister, teacher, prayer partner, counselor and creator of spiritual experiences for our community. I also serve as start-up CEO, business manager, writer and media specialist. On past vacations, I would bring my laptop with me and stay in contact with people, overseeing service execution, promotional writing, payroll, music, etc. I will not be doing that this August. I am leaving it behind so that I can focus on renewal, restoration and joy. From my deepest center, I ask that you support your spiritual community wholeheartedly and fully participate in it while I am away. Here's what you can do:

Look how far you’ve come! But where are you going now?

graduateBy Rev. Carol

My youngest daughter graduated from high school just a few days ago. What a bittersweet occasion. There’s a psychological threshold to cross when you become an ”empty nester” and we have just a couple months before it really becomes our new way of life. Having been inextricably linked to the public school calendar through our three daughters for 20 years, this was our last high school graduation. So the momentous occasion brought me to pause and reflect: Why is graduation so significant and how can we continue to bring that same level of meaning into our lives?

Easter Story Characters – History and Metaphysics – Who are you?

By Rev. Carol

Judas betrays JesusEaster is not a spectator sport. Easter is a transcendent event in human history and also a very personal story. I invite you to fully immerse yourself in all of it – Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter morning. This Easter season at Abundant Life Spiritual Center, we are walking in the footsteps of Jesus of Nazareth and experiencing his decisions, his centeredness in Spirit, his profoundly deep human struggles and his ultimate transformation. We honor Jesus of Nazareth's huge gift to humankind, for he showed us how to live the fully human life. He showed us how to face every human challenge with Love, Non-resistance and Non-attachment, ultimately resulting in the transcendence of death itself. But the Easter story is also our story.

Let It Go

FrozenBy Rev. Carol

Disney’s new animated movie, Frozen, is chock-full of empowering messages with spiritual themes. It also has a surprisingly non-cliché plot line. I’m not intending to review it here, but I sure loved it and was especially inspired by the song sung by Princess Elsa (Idina Menzel), “Let It Go.”

The snow glows white on the mountain tonight,
Not a footprint to be seen.
A kingdom of isolation and it looks like I'm the queen.
The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside.
Couldn't keep it in, Heaven knows I tried.

Love treeBy Rev. Carol

It’s here! February – the month of Love.  I know that makes some people cringe, while others go wild with romantic expectancy.  Check where you are on this spectrum, observe it and be curious.  That’s what the spiritual life is all about, after all. This year, let’s put cards, flowers and gifts aside and ponder: “What if we made Valentine’s Day a day of Universal Love?”

Jesus said, “Love one another.” Sometimes that seems hard, doesn’t it?

He also said, “Love your enemy.”  That seems crazy hard.
