  • Get Over It! Sunday Morning Class

Bonnie headshot 2Come to class before services in October!  Bonnie DeMartini will be facilitating a class based on Paul Hasselbeck and Bil Holton’s provocative book, Get Over It!  This book is zippy, concise, and humorous, and cuts to the chase as it challenges the assumptions of statements like "I'm right where I should be" or "Fake it 'til you make it" and suggesting restatement phrases that align with Unity principles.  The class will run on Sunday mornigns for four weeks in October.

  • Calling All Those Who Wish To Serve!

Bigger than yourselfBeing in Sacred Service is a spiritual practice and part of the spiritual path. As we near the start of our third year at Abundant Life Unity we are in need of a larger group of servers!  It is so easy to serve in this way.  Step One: Come 30 minutes early. All those who serve by setting up the sanctuary, the sound, the hallway tables, the Connection Café and Kids’ Community, along with our Sunday greeters and ushers pray-in with Reverend Carol at 10am. This time allows us to get centered on the work we are doing in service to our spiritual community. Then we all go to work! Step Two: Do a service.

  • Spiritual Community 'Town Hall' Meeting - This Sunday, August 26

Steering-ship-240x200Do you have a stake in the life of our spiritual community? Do you want us to succeed and thrive long-term? If you do, then make sure that you come to our first ‘Town Hall’ meeting after service this Sunday, August 26.

Spirit is at the helm of our growing community and we need ‘all hands on deck’ to become all that we are capable of becoming. We are not able to talk much about our business when we gather for service or classes so here’s an opportunity to connect in and learn. We intend to hold periodic ‘Town Hall’ meetings where you can find out more and ask questions about where we’re headed, our financial state, what's needed for long-term stability and viability, the venue search, and other organizationally related considerations. The meeting will start promptly after service and end at 1PM. Child care will be available.

  • Welcoming Brainstorming Meeting - Sunday, August 5

WelcomeCreating a welcoming environment and connecting people into our community is one of the most important things we can do. It's an awful experience to visit a church and have no one talk to you, but it happens! At the same time, some newcomers are overwhelmed if they are overly attended to. They just want to quietly come, check us out and slip out the door. How do we achieve the right balance? Join us after service on Sunday, August 5 from noon to 1PM and help us brainstorm ideas and create some action steps that will enhance our welcoming environment. This session will be facilitated by Bonnie DeMartini.

  • Promotion Brainstorming Session

GettingtheWordOutWe have so much to offer the world. Our service teams work hard to put on the best services we know how. But do people know we are here? How can we get the word out there?
Seventy-five percent of church growth happens through personal invitation. How can we assist people in effectively asking friends and family to join us?

Stay for an hour after service on Sunday, July 15and let's brainstorm ways to promote our spiritual community more effectively. BECAUSE.... we have a mighty work to do. We are about the business of transforming our world into one of more Love, Wisdom, Joy and Understanding. Who wants to play the big game? This will be held at the Patty Turner Center right after the service.

  • Leadership Class - Wednesdays in August

Small group leadershipMany people fell in love with the small group experience we started in our recent Foundations class. Ongoing small groups is where true connection and spiritual support happens in our community. In fact, we are going to call these "Spiritual Life Groups" because that is what they are - groups designed to directly support your spiritual life. Perhaps you feel called to begin a Men's group or a Women's group or a Couple's group. Or perhaps you want to continue the group that was formed during the Foundations class.

If you have interest in leading a Spiritual Life group now or in the future, and have completed or plan to complete the Foundations in Unity class, consider attending our 4-week leadership class this August. In this class you will learn skills that will help you effectively lead a group within our spiritual community. Specifically the class content will include:

  • Welcome New Board Member

Bonnie headshot 2We welcome Bonnie DeMartini to the Board of Trustees. Bonnie has assumed the Treasurer role on the board, replacing Leo Cinquino, who has elected to resign. We are grateful for Leo's significant contribution as a founding member, Board President and Board Treasurer.

We are excited about what Bonnie brings to our leadership. Nearly five years ago, she began attending a Unity church in Naples, Florida.  While there, she immersed herself in Unity by taking classes, attending workshops, doing mission work in Guatemala and volunteering in the bookstore. She was searching for a Unity church in her home community when she thankfully found Abundant Life Unity Church in April, 2011. Bonnie plunged herself into our spiritual community and has made herself a vital partner and participant from the start.

  • Summer Sermon Series

Jesus walksBy popular request, we have two enlightening sermon series planned for the summer. A 4-week series on "The Life and Teachings of Jesus" begins on June 24. After a recent sermon on “Who is Jesus?” demystified much of the mythology that many of us grew up with, our community asked for more. We will focus on some key teachings like “Turn the Other Cheek, Really?” as well as some well known parables.

After that, beginning Sunday July 22, we will start a new 4-week series that will boldly compete with any reality TV series or daytime drama - "Relationships of Biblical Proportions."

New families are joining us and the kids are enjoying the interactive program we create with them. Some of their Sunday explorations have included Building Community and Celebrating My God Self. Youth and Family Director, Debbie Coccia says “Our kids are awesome. I’m amazed at how quickly and readily they grasp the Unity spiritual principles that we teach at Abundant Life. It’s a privilege and a lot of fun working with them to build a spiritual community.”

  • Women In Business Feature in Local Newspaper

Carol headshotEach year the local What's Happening! community newspaper features a special segment on Women In Business. We submitted an article on Rev. Carol as a great way to promote our church and get the word out about who we are. The following 180-word segment was published in the Deerfield (online) and Northbrook April 25 editions as well as the May edition in Lake Forest:

    Rev. Carol Saunders

After 20 years working as a chemical engineer/manager in the energy business, Carol Saunders knew there was more to life. The next ten years she spent on the spiritual path, eventually leading to ordination and the grassroots start-up of Abundant Life Unity Church in Deerfield.
